Resistance to Gender Quotas in Latin America

  • Ian Perrin

Canning House was delighted to kick of its Women's Day Series with a book launch by Dr Malu Gatto, discussing her new book 'Resistance to Gender Quotas in Latin America', with Professor Maxine Molyneux, both from the Institute of the Americas at University College London (UCL).

Discussions focussed on how gender quotas within electoral settings have arisen in almost every region of the world, and acknowledged that this is the first book to follow legislator's behaviour towards gender quotas closely, shedding light onto how majority male incumbents often follow their self-preservation instincts, slowing and weakening the implementation of such quotas.

Case studies focussed primarily on policymaking in Brazil, Costa Rica, and Chile, and provided insight into approaches to gender equality in Latin America more broadly. The event provided a space for a valuable discussion on gender quotas in Latin America, and the political situation of women in Latin America today.

Canning House is thrilled that Dr Gatto’s book is open source, and is available via the button below.
