Canning House and ProEcuador convene Roundtable between the President of Ecuador, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister for the Environment and Multinational Investors

On Tuesday 2nd November, in the context of the COP26 World Leaders Summit in Glasgow, Canning House and ProEcuador convened a roundtable between H.E. President Guillermo Lasso, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauricio Montalvo, Minister for the Environment Gustavo Manrique and major multi-national investors with operational potential in Ecuador. The forum provided participants an unprecedented opportunity to discuss current and future investment plans for the country as well as potential business barriers and opportunities.

At the heart of discussion was President Lasso’s expansion on his more recent Glasgow announcement of the creation of the world’s largest marine reserve spanning over 60,000 sq km, in collaboration with the nations of Colombia, Costa Rica, and Panama. This ambitious project was well-received by those present, as was the President’s commitment to supporting local island and coastal fishing communities as they adapt to using purely artisanal forms of fishing. The president also announced that a priority for the four governments involved will be seeking foreign investment to ensure the area is sufficiently policed from illegal fishing boats.

Sustainable mining was also at the forefront of discussion, as President Lasso stressed that the Ecuadorean government would be cracking down on illegal mining, as a way of ensuring greater controls and reducing pollution as a priority, all themes that Canning House will be shining a spotlight on in the near future.
