Canning House’s packed agenda in Madrid

Last week, Canning House’s CEO, Jeremy Browne; Head of Corporate Affairs, Juan Teran Jurado; and Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Susana Berruecos were in Madrid, attending a variety of events and meetings in the Spanish capital.

First on the agenda was the launch of the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) “BID for the Americas” European chapter, on Thursday 29 May. Held at Casa de América, the IDB’s newly-launched programme aims to foster business opportunities and stronger economic ties between Latin America and the Caribbean and key partners from around the globe.

The event featured remarks by IDB’s President, Ilan Goldfajn; Spain’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, Carlos Cuerpo; a fireside chat between Ilan Goldfajn and Nadia Calviño, President of the European Investment Bank; and panels on sustainable infrastructure, digitalisation and inclusion, and clean energy.

Subsequently, Juan and Susana met with senior representatives from organisations including IDB Lab, the IDB’s innovation and venture capital laboratory; Casa de América, a centre for the strengthening of ties between Spain and the Americas; the Real Instituto Elcano, an international and strategic studies think tank; CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean; the IE Business School; Euroamérica and Lateinamerika Verein.

Also in amongst that packed and productive schedule, Juan attended an event featuring Guillermo Lasso, in which the former president of Ecuador spoke on his political experiences.

And finally, on Sunday 2 June, with thousands of Mexicans voting from Spain in Mexico’s largest ever election, Susana documented the experience of Mexican voters in Madrid on polling day. You can read her analysis of the election’s results, following the landslide victory of Claudia Sheinbaum, on Canning House’s blog - click here.

Canning House thanks the IDB for its kind invitation to attend the "BID for the Americas" launch. Find about more about the programme here, and watch a recording of the launch event here.
