06/01/2022 - Boric sweeps to victory, ushering in new era in Chile

When the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet ended on 11 March 1990, Gabriel Boric was only four. On the same day 32 years later he will become Chile’s 34th head of state, the youngest president in the country’s history. Boric, who was at the vanguard of a new generation of politicians who cut their teeth during the student protests of 2011, defeated his far-right rival José Antonio Kast, who extolled Pinochet’s legacy and opposed the current rewriting of the constitution, a relic of the dictatorship.
