27/08/2020 - Ecuador’s presidential race up and running

Despite 20 parties managing to nominate presidential candidates for next February’s general election before the midnight deadline on 23 August, some high-profile names are set to be absent from the ballot. Former vice president Otto Sonnenholzner (2018-2020) and five-time former presidential candidate Álvaro Noboa both dropped out before the deadline, despite strong polling performances in recent weeks, while divisions within the indigenous movement put paid to Jaime Vargas’ and Leonidas Iza’s presidential ambitions.
