10/06/2021 - Peruvian politics upended as Castillo edges Fujimori
Peru is poised to lurch leftwards on 28 July when Pedro Castillo will take office, assuming the electoral authorities confirm that he has narrowly defeated his right-wing rival Keiko Fujimori in the second round of presidential elections on 6 June. What is not clear is how far left or what type of left; the authoritarian or democratic variety; one motivated by delivering social justice or one intent on perpetuating itself in power. The party for which Castillo ran for election describes itself as Marxist-Leninist, but he veered between espousing the same cause and adopting a much more moderate discourse during the campaign.
