03/12/2020 - Brazil's municipal run-off boosts the political mainstream

The results of Brazil’s municipal run-off, held on 29 November in 57 cities which concentrate around a quarter of the electorate, confirmed the trends observed in the first round of the elections on 15 November: the poor performance of candidates endorsed by President Jair Bolsonaro, the political defeat of the leftist Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), and the success of candidates from centre-right establishment parties. With the revival of the political mainstream, some in Brazil are even hopeful that the country has begun to move past the bitterly polarising politics of the last few years.
