Update on COVID-19 in Latin America

Canning House present an update on the current situation of COVID-19 in Latin America across economics, politics and health. As the global coronavirus pandemic continues its spread, experts from Corporate Member BancTrust & Co. and UCL offer their insight on the varied policy responses and possible impacts of the virus on markets and health systems in the region.

Ramiro Blazquez

Head of Research and Strategy at BancTrust & Co.

Prior to joining BancTrust, Ramiro was Head of Research at Mills Capital Markets, an Argentine brokerage house. In the previous ten years, he worked as Senior Latam Economist for HSBC Global Research, covering the major South American countries. He was also an economist at the IMF’s Argentina office, Managing Director at Universidad Di Tella’s Center for Financial Research (CIF) and adviser for the Presidential office during Fernando De la Rúa’s term.

Ramiro has taught several courses at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, both at graduate and undergraduate levels. He is a former Chevening Scholar, a fellowship granted by the United Kingdom’s Foreign Commonwealth Office. He holds an MSc in Financial Engineering from Birkbeck College, The University of London, and an MA in Economics from Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (Argentina). In addition, he pursued graduate studies in Finance at Universidad de San Andrés, where he also obtained his Economics degree.

Dr Alejandro Arenas-Pinto

Principal Clinical Research Fellow at UCL's Institute for Global Health

Alejandro is a Venezuelan physician with training in infectious and tropical diseases. He currently works at UCL London as Senior Clinical Research Associate at the Institute for Global Health where he is involved with postgraduate teaching in Clinical Trials.

Previously, Alejandro served as Assistant Professor of medicine at the Jose María Vargas Medical School at UCV in Venezuela. He also teaches clinical research methodology in collaboration with academic institutions in various countries in Latin America.
