In the transition from a fossil-based to a green economy, Science can play a critical role in shaping bioeconomic opportunities and informing sustainable use of natural resources.
Ahead of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP16 in Calí, Colombia, Prof. Monique Simmonds OBE, deputy director of Science at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, explores the potential of the bioeconomy, with particular reference to Latin America, in Canning House's upcoming Business Breakfast.
Monique is responsible for co-ordinating projects with different business sectors that promote and utilise plant and fungal-based solutions to meet current global challenges. She has over 30 years’ experience of research into different aspects of plant and fungal chemistry, with an emphasis on the traditional and economic uses of plants and fungi, including quality control of medicinal plants.
Monique has co-authored patents for compounds in the areas of malaria, cancer, pest control, cosmetics and has been involved in getting food, medicinal and cosmetic products to market. She also heads up the Commercial Innovation Unit at Kew that co-ordinates the science-led commercial activities at Kew including setting up spin-outs.
