Round-Table with Chile's Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Edgardo Riveros

Canning House is delighted to announce a talk with Chile’s Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Edgardo Riveros.

Amongst other topics, Mr Riveros will speak on Chile’s vision in relation to the Pacific Alliance and how this integration process can converge with other countries in Latin America.

Mr Riveros has Law degrees from the Universidad Católica de Chile and the Universidad Complutense in Madrid and a Master in International Public Law and Political Science from the University of Bonn.

He was appointed Under Secretary General of the Government by President Aylwin (1990) and remained in that post through all his and President Frei Ruiz-Tagle’s governments (1997).  He was elected Congressman for the Christian Democratic Party in 1998 and re-elected four years later.  In Congress, he chaired the House Foreign Affairs Committee (1998-1999 and 2003-2004).  He also participated in the Labour and Social Security Research Committee and chaired the Special Committee on Drugs.

He was member of the Advisory Committee for the Maritime Boundary in the Chile Peru case before the International Court of Justice and a consultant for the International Labour Office.  Between march 2010 and august 2011 Mr Riveros was part of the Presidential Advisory Commission on Political Imprisonment and Torture.

In January 2014 he was appointed the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs by President Michelle Bachelet, taking office on 11 March this year.

Undersecretary Riveros has written several specialised publications on international affairs and international law.
