Brazil's tumultuous year has continued; an impeachment process against President Dilma Rousseff began in late 2015 and last month reached a critical moment with Vice-President Michel Temer taking over as acting president. This panel discussion will therefore take a stock take of what has happened and address the following issues amongst others:

  • What are Temer’s chances of success in lasting beyond this period, given his lack of popularity and the fact that he is also facing charges?
  • Will the new Temer administration be able to secure approval from congress for an adjustment and growth program that will help to rebuild the Brazilian economy, or will the planned economic reforms be met by continued resistance?
  • What are the chances of Dilma returning as President?
  • Once a permanent new government is in place, how is its performance likely to be affected by the on-going corruption investigations and trials?
  • Is there a conflict between fixing the economy, getting the government to work well, and prosecuting corruption?
  • How will the on-going problems in Brazil affect its regional and international agenda?
  • What changes are likely to be seen in Brazil’s commercial and trade policies?

Chairman of Canning House, Peter Collecott, will chair the talk and we are delighted to welcome the following speakers: Professor Leslie Bethell, Visiting Professor at KCL, Emeritus Professor at UCL, and Emeritus Fellow of St Antony’s College, Oxford; Professor Anthony Pereira, Director of the Brazil Institute, KCL; and Len Pannett, Consultant at Visagio.
