Latin America has entered the limelight as an attractive emerging market with an appetite for financial services and fintech - an opportunity the UK is well placed to seize, as a global financial centre with historic ties to the region. Join us as we discuss the possibility for rekindling collaboration between the UK and LAC’s financial services industries.
London, one of the world's financial capitals, has a lot to offer as a platform for LAC investors, governments and businesses: unrivalled international market connectivity and access to global capital; expertise from insurance, banking and wealth management to fintech, consulting and cybersecurity; a favourable time zone, covering most major markets with a difference to LAC as few as three hours; and flight networking serving many of LAC's financial centres directly.
In LAC, a huge unbanked population, widespread access to mobile technology and poor traditional financial services have created a breeding ground for new financial technologies - fintech - and the sector is booming. From startups to now-global giants, this vibrant, innovative and rapidly expanding sector offers major opportunities for investment and collaboration between LAC and the UK.
Latin America - as one of the world’s hottest fintech markets - and London - as a global financial capital - offer one another unique opportunities. It is exactly these that Canning House seeks to explore at this conference, with support from J.P. Morgan.

The financial services industry represents an estimated 20% of the global economy and plays a pivotal role in economic growth. The pandemic scaled up global demands for financial services and accelerated the push towards digitalisation. Latin America has come into the limelight as an attractive emerging market with a growing appetite for financial services and fintech. The dramatic growth of Latin America and the Caribbean’s (LAC) middle class poses unprecedented opportunities for financial-services investment and expertise. The UK is well placed to seize such opportunities, as a global financial centre with historic ties with the region. The British financial sector holds great prestige in LAC, dating back to when British investors helped establish the banking systems of countries such as Argentina and Chile two centuries ago. Today, in the post-Brexit era, there is an impetus for the UK to restrengthen and expand its horizons beyond its immediate neighbours. It is, thus, an opportune moment to discuss the possibility for rekindling collaboration between the UK and LAC’s financial services industries. This event seeks to open the discussion by addressing two key questions: 1) What can London- as a global financial centre- offer LAC? 2) Which opportunities exist for fintech collaboration between the UK and LAC?
London is a global financial centre with a strong tradition of openness to global talent, investment and collaboration. Over one third of issuers admitted to the London Stock Exchange are international, operating in over 100 countries. Around 200 foreign banks choose to have branches in the UK. Every day, $US3.8tn of forex trades are transacted through the UK, the equivalent to 38% of global turnover. London lies far ahead of New York (US$1.9tn), Singapore ($930bn) and Hong Kong (US$690bn). What can London offer LAC investors, governments and businesses? Unrivalled international market connectivity and access to global capital. A pool of financial services expertise from insurance to banking, fintech to consulting, cybersecurity to wealth management. A time zone that covers almost all major markets and a time difference with South America that is as little as three hours. Physical connectivity through one of the world’s most comprehensive flight networks including direct flights to LAC’s financial centres such as São Paulo and Mexico City. The City of London holds the conditions, expertise and capital to meet LAC’s demands for financial services.
A key financial trend in LAC is the explosion of fintech. Poor financial services, a huge unbanked population and widespread access to mobile technology have created a breeding ground for fintech. Moreover, LAC’s US$142-billion remittance market makes the payments and remittances sector poised for exceptional growth. The region has given birth to global fintech giants including the Brazilian digital banking platform Nubank, which now has 70 million users across Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. Latin America- as one of the world’s hottest fintech markets- and London- as a global financial capital- each offer unique opportunities. It is exactly these unique opportunities that this event seeks to explore.
