Human Rights and Democracy in the Americas
with Luis Almagro
Secretary General of the Organization of American States
In 2001, the Organization of American States adopted the Inter-American Democratic Charter. The Charter outlines the essential elements of representative democracy, including but not limited to: holding free and fair elections; respect for human rights; freedom of expression and of the press; a pluralistic system of political parties; independence of the branches of government; and the constitutional subordination of state institutions to a legally constituted civilian authority.
However, despite an encouraging consolidation of democratic principles in many Latin American nations, over twenty years since the charter was adopted, questions remain about progress in many of these areas in countries throughout the region, with concerns about democratic backsliding and human rights abuses receiving ongoing attention.
In this event, the Secretary General will provide attendees with an overview of the current state of democracy and human rights across the region. Tamara Sujú, Executive Director, CASLA Institute, will also be in attendance to provide an update on Venezuela, Human Rights, and the ICC.
