HOW TRUMP II WILL IMPACT LATIN AMERICA
Nobody disputes that the return of President Trump will have global ramifications, but what will they be? With Latin America, the greatest focus will be on Mexico, the US's biggest trading partner, and on the front line for concerns about illegal immigration and drugs. But the implications of the Trump-Vance administration will reach across the continent: on climate change policy (as Brazil hosts COP30), on the increasing stand-off with a Chinese-led alternative to US hegemony (as Brazil hosts the BRICs), and on trade. And with a new Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, steeped in the ideological tussle for the political soul of Latin America, the consequences for Venezuela and Cuba, or for newly favoured nations including Argentina, could be profound.
One thing is for sure: it will not be 'business as usual' for US-Latin American relations under Trump II. Following the inauguration of the new US President in Washington DC, Canning House has assembled an expert panel to assess what is most likely to happen in the next four years, and what it will mean for the nations and people of Latin America.
