Latin America is one of the most urbanised regions of the planet, with 80% of its population living in cities (far above the 50% average for the world as a whole). As such, the future of Latin America is already being forged in its cities. The last Canning Paper of 2017 looks at the different social, economic and demographic forces at play in Latin America’s urban areas, with a focus on issues of urban housing, transport, and crime. The paper also explores the concept of ‘smart cities’ and provides a snapshot of a number of key Latin American cities, including São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Medellin, Santiago de Chile and Rio de Janeiro.

Canning House is delighted to welcome the author of the paper, Andrew Thompson of LatinNews, to present and discuss the report and its findings. The event will be chaired by Linda Newson, director of the Institute of Latin American Studies, and Canning House Trustee.
