Canning Lecture with H.E. Iván Duque Márquez, President of Colombia
- Morning
As part of his first official visit to the UK, H.E. Iván Duque Márquez, President of Colombia, will give a Canning Lecture hosted by Canning House on Monday 17th June in London. The President will be introduced by Mark Menzies MP, Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Peru; and Lord Mountevans, Honorary President of Canning House and former Lord Mayor.
Since 1997, the prestigious Canning Lecture has been delivered by visiting Latin American and Iberian Presidents and Heads of Government. Previous speakers include Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile, who gave the Lecture in 2008 and 2016; and Enrique Peña Nieto, President of Mexico, in 2015.
The UK has strong ties with Colombia and a longstanding relationship built over more than 200 years. The two countries work closely on a wide range of issues, but this visit will focus on four priority areas: trade & investment, creative economy, science & innovation, and sustainability.
President Duque’s visit occurs against the backdrop of an inquiry being conducted by the House of Lords International Relations Committee to assess the importance of the Pacific Alliance, an economic grouping made up by Colombia, Chile, Peru and Mexico, for the UK’s future trade relations with Latin America.
This event is by invitation only.
