Adding value to coffee and cacao in Latin America
Please note: the time for this event has changed. It will now take place from 16:30-18:00 BST.
In her new report, 'Adding value to coffee and cacao in Latin America,' Canning House Research Fellow Layla Zaglul Ruiz discusses coffee and fine chocolate's place amongst high-end food movements, similar to craft beer and specialty cheese.
This trend moves away from mass-produced, uniform products towards unique, high-quality items. These premium markets value artisan skills, single origin, direct trade, and the product's origin, rewarding quality and craftsmanship.
With reference to case studies in Costa Rica and Peru, Layla explores the implications of coffee and chocolate value chains for trade and economies across Latin America.
In this webinar, Layla talks through her research, with former President of Costa Rica Carlos Alvarado Quesada, ECLAC Washington Office Director Andrés Valenciano Yamuni, and Vanúsia Nogueira, Executive Director of the International Coffee Organization, acting as discussants.
The discussion will be chaired by Irene Mia, Senior Fellow for Latin America & Conflict, Security and Development at IISS, and a Canning House Trustee.
