Given that Latin America is the region of the world that has urbanised most rapidly (80% of Latin Americans now live in cities) it has a huge amount to gain from the use of new technologies to improve urban living. A 2018 report by McKinsey Global Institute concluded that ‘smart’ applications in cities had the potential to improve urban life in at least eight key areas including mobility, security, and healthcare. This paper examines the potential and assesses the difficulties in the rapid adoption of smart technologies in Latin American cities.
