18/02/2021 - ​Vaccine scandal inflames febrile political tensions in Peru

No country in Latin America has been hit harder by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic than Peru, both in terms of loss of life and economic damage. And no country in the region has a more jaundiced view of its politicians. As such, the revelation this week that dozens of senior politicians in Peru used their influence to secretly obtain vaccines against Covid-19 for themselves and family members will have come as no surprise to a public convinced that they are motivated purely by self-interest with no regard for the standards and ethics of public office. But the resulting scandal will ensure that, less than two months before presidential and congressional elections, disillusionment with the political class in Peru plumbs new depths.
