10/2020 - US aims to counter China with ‘América Crece’

Despite its relatively low profile following an official launch in December 2019, US-backed regional infrastructure investment plan ‘América Crece’ (‘Growth in the Americas’) has gained considerable momentum in recent months. Over a dozen countries in Latin America – and all Andean nations besides Venezuela – have now signed accords under the banner of the initiative. At the same time, América Crece has increasingly been used by the US Foreign Service as a stick with which to beat China and other regional adversaries.
